Combining broccoli and chicken may help fight cancer

A new study reported in Carcinogenesis suggests that by using combinations of certain nutrients found in foods, we can increase their potency compared to using one nutrient alone.

The researchers put selenium (found in chicken, fish, nuts, mushrooms and eggs) with the phytonutrient sulforaphane (found in broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage) and tested its effect in the laboratory using cell cultures. Results suggested that the effect of the combination was 13 times stronger than using either nutrient alone, and improved the cancer-fighting action of cells significantly.
